What is a drug? Medicine, misuse and the line between

A drug is any substance that changes how your body or mind works. Paracetamol, antibiotics and cough syrup are drugs. So are alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and tramadol.

Medicine becomes misuse when it is taken without a prescription, in bigger amounts than advised, for a different reason (like getting high), or mixed with other substances.

The key idea for today: a legal substance can still be harmful, and an illegal drug is never made safe by being “natural” or “strong enough to handle”.

Try this: look at any medicine label at home. Notice the dose, the warning and the instruction to ask a doctor. Those details exist because the same substance can heal or harm.
